MESH REMOVAL CHRISTCHURCH AIRPORT CONTROL TOWER

In June, Abseil Access removed the architectural mesh on the lower portion of the air traffic control tower at Christchurch Airport.

Abseil worker Dan Smith, fully and safely roped in, took the opportunity to do some simulated air yoga. Extreme yoga practitioner Dan says the job was a perfect chance to express his karma.

Airways New Zealand contracted Abseil Access to remove the mesh, which was de-tensioned by the settling of the new steel vortex frame during the Canterbury earthquakes and has since suffered whipping stress in high winds.

Drill and blast team this time making an 80m track across a mudstone slip.

Quintin and Jono battling slippy site conditions but pulling through in the end. Jono’s only comment was “a higher order of magnitude for dirty gear”.

Atene track due to re-open now after much hard work.
