Abseil Access were contracted by Fulton Hogan|John Holland JV, to install power gantries on Paremata Rail Bridge as part of the Wellington Metro electrification upgrade.

We installed 192x M30 stainless steel bolts with epoxy glue into a 400mm 40mm diameter holes that we core-drilled into the existing bridge piers. The majority of this work was at night, over the water course below as well as under the two active train lines. Each gantry had two brackets attaching it to the pier below with 24x bolts per pier. All of the bolts had to be installed within mm’s of tolerance.

Special thanks to Surf Life Savers NZ for their support throughout our works, as well as Hilti for the high performance core drills and bits. Our greatest thanks goes to our crew who devoted sleepless nights for over 10 weeks.

With any luck this will aid Kiwirail to provide faster and more reliable trains in the near future!

The project required a combination of rock scaling, boulder popping and bulk removal using drill and blast techniques. Sections of the bluffs were extremely dilated, fractured, and with multiple types of basalt.
As you can see we got lucky with the winter weather, which allowed for the top quality filming and editing by
