WEED ERADICATION

Protecting New Zealand's biological diversity

More than 200 introduced plant species are now pests that cause huge ecological problems in New Zealand's protected natural areas.

Remote mountainous regions, cliffs and gorges are often especially rich in rare and vulnerable plant species. Since 1995, Abseil Access has developed a range of specialised access and control techniques to remove weeds from these special places.

Successful contracts include:

  • Removing Pinus contorta from deep gorges on the North Island volcanic plateau since 1995.
  • Cutting and poisoning Lycium ferocissimum (boxthorn) and Chrysanthemoides monilifera (boneseed) from seacliffs in the Bay of Plenty, Hauraki Gulf and the greater Wellington area.
  • Eradicating Asparagus scandens and asparagoides, and Pampas Grass (Cortaderia sp.) from seacliffs and previously unexplored gorges on Little Barrier Island Nature Reserve since 1997.

Any gardener knows how difficult it is to eradicate weeds. We are committed to getting results, returning year after year. We know how tough the job is, and we know that we make a difference.

Grid and rotation searches are used. The locations of weeds are recorded using photographs and GPS. Control methods can be removal by hand, chainsaw, spray or poison.

Our staff have NZQA accredited training. We also promote the use of qualified mountain guides in our teams, as they are skilled and experienced outdoors people, comfortable working in remote and hazardous regions.

Our staff don't just kill weeds. As rare visitors to these cliffs, they can also provide new information on indigenous species and their habitats.

On completion, we provide our clients with a full-colour photo report of our work.
