Big Balls

Top of Wellingtons highest mountain and back at our favorite oversized football for the upteenth time. Two full repaints (1996 and 2012) and annual wash downs and were getting to know this unusual structure quite well…but this is the calmest night ever and warm too, Leons in a ‘T’ shirt!

If only it were the central hub for global spy network, unfortunately it is only the primary radar for NZ Civil Aviation.

ACC rates us…

We recently undertook an ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices Audit to confirm that our systems are robust, procedures sound, and policies effective. They thought so and have awarded us ACC WSMP Secondary Level Accreditation. What does this mean? We have demonstrated a high level of commitment and effective action to the health & safety of our Staff, our Contractors, our Clients and the Public. Well done Team!

Kaikoura Progresses…

The hard work continues. Teams of our expert Abseilers are lifted to the top of the large slips every day, with equipment to scale and shift scree, dirt, boulders and displaced vegetation. This enables us to work further down the slope clearing, until the various repair & rebuild teams can eventually safely start to clear the slips from the road & rail lines. The repairs are a huge operation – logistically challenging, weather dependent and with large resources required to run smoothly.

Glover Street Ngauranga Gorge Wellington

We were called in to remove the rock fall slip debris from above the rear of the buildings at 20 Glover Street to make sure it did not put anymore holes in the buildings! We also did the scaling of the slip to make sure there is no remaining loose rock that could easily fall down.

We had to fly a small excavator up to the slopes to be able to remove all the rubble!

2 Bridges in the Far North

We have built another 2 cable suspension walkway bridges in the Far North. They are both in the Twin Coast bike trail, and cross over 2 historic railway truss bridges – on the inside – so don’t get hit by a train! They were 25 and 76m long respectively.   These were a design and build – so we won the job with our own design – how’s that for diversity?

Kaikoura Continues…

We are even more busy with the huge amount of slips on the roads into and out of Kaikoura, with more teams joining to help get things done as quickly as possible. We will be continuing our efforts through into the new year – interesting times ahead!

If you think you have got what it takes to join the A-Team – give us a call!

4 Bridges in 4 Months – starting with the Makara Peak Bike Park Bridge

It has been a busy time, what with 4 walkway suspension bridges in various beautiful locations being put up in 4 months.

As a joint non-profit venture with the Makara Peak supporters, we joined forces and built this spectacular 76m long suspension bridge as a vital link in the new Easy-Up track to the top of the mountain. Thanks to Wellington’s City Council for their support and project management.

Kaikoura earthquake

The recent Kaikoura earthquake sequence has brought many slips cutting off vital rail and road infrastructure. The NZ slang word munted has become the official description. Still, even the longest journey starts with a single step and the clean up process is now well under way. Abseil Access crews have been there since day 1 and ultra busy trundling the almost infinite number of  boulders on the numerous new slips on SH1 and SH70. Every tool in the book has been used from airbags, explosives, helicopters and monsoon buckets. A sterling effort all round. So much more to go…

Te Papa Entrance Improvement

Our structural steel corrosion protection team is busy at work on the front entrance of New Zealand’s national world renowned museum. Honza and his team are loving the limelight of being in the public eye and ensuring that the steelwork will last for another 25 years!

Don’t worry – the blue tint window film is not permanent… although it does add a new look…

Mesh Removal Christchurch Airport Control Tower

In June, Abseil Access removed the architectural mesh on the lower portion of the air traffic control tower at Christchurch Airport. Abseil worker Dan Smith, fully and safely roped in, took the opportunity to do some simulated air yoga. Extreme yoga practitioner Dan says the job was a perfect chance to express his karma. Airways New Zealand contracted Abseil Access to remove the mesh, which was de-tensioned by the settling of the new steel vortex frame during the Canterbury earthquakes and has since suffered whipping stress in high winds.
